For the “true” believing Christian, in Christ, we see that the cross is a wooden ‘altar’ upon which God sacrificed His Holy Word, The Spotless Lamb, to pay the sin debt of all who would receive it. There He bought redemption for all. That same altar is the altar where we too can sacrifice ourselves to God. It represents: salvation, redemption, salvation, unity, and righteousness.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
